THORNE MOORS BIRDING BLOG 2011

LATE NEWS 2011: MONTAGU’S HARRIER ADULT MALE Seen early June (either first or second Monday) around 13.00 by David Smith, Tom Minskip and Bernard Minskip.

“I (David) first saw a large pale bird flying low over the moor framed against the trees, coming S just on the E side of Fison’s Road North. First impressions were it could be a Lesser Black-backed Gull, but then I quickly realised it was a harrier. I pointed it out to the other two observers and first thoughts were that it was a male Hen Harrier, but as it turned towards us we spotted the black band across the top of the secondaries, and Tom said it looks like a male Montagu’s.

It flew round over the moor for a period of time. We were able to see the long, pale grey narrow wings with large black tips. Then it started to circle and gain height and as it flew over us we were clearly able to see the two narrow bands on the underside of the secondaries and noted its slim body and narrow tail. It continued to quickly gain height and flew off probably NE or NNE. All were satisfied it was an adult male Montagu’s Harrier.” THIS IS ONLY THE 3RD RECORD of modern times there having been sightings in 1968, 1975 and 1995.

01.08.11 (BPW) Gull update. The gull was released today, and although it looked fit, see photos, I did not know till released that it still could not fly (it tried). However it was fast enough on its feet for me (or a fox?) to not be able to re-catch it and rapidly got over a field away. It remained here for over an hour, but when next checked had gone, and almost certainly flew from this vast bare field. Hopefully the couple of sardines it gulped down just before release gave it enough energy after a while to get into the air.

31.07.11 (BPW) Gull update. Gull is fighting fit, literally as my bleeding thumb can attest. Release is tomorrow morning, will update with photos. If you find a moribund, paralysed gull, do not take it to the RSPCA, they will put them down (they did first 2 I took, which is why I now treat them myself, don't be taken in by the make-believe on telly for their image). An otherwise fit gull will not die of Botulism regardless of what anyone will tell you, they are tougher than old boots and just need somewhere safe to recover with food and water.

Species below seen on farmland at south end of the moors. 4 Mallard 1 Tufted Duck female with 8 young Thorne Waste Drain, 2 Common Pheasant, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Eurasian Sparrowhawk, 2 Common Buzzard, 2 Common Kestrel, 1 Moorhen, 1 Northern Lapwing, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Herring Gull, 1 Black-headed Gull, 6 Rock Dove/feral, 8 Stock Dove, 20 Wood Pigeon, 10 Common Swift, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Magpie, 4 Carrion Crow, 2 Blue Tit, 50 Barn Swallow Elmhirst Pump, 1 House Martin, 1 Willow Warbler, 2 Common Whitethroat, 2 Wren, 1 Blackbird, 2 Robin, 8 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Common Chaffinch, 2 Goldfinch, 30 Linnet, 1 Yellowhammer.

As you can see she just sits and shits around the garden all day! But actually making good progress on diet of sardines, potatoes, oil and yogurt mash with watered milk to drink and grated cheese as a treat. Now moving legs freely, but cannot stand, can now move wings a bit, is more vicious and less gentle………must be female….? Cause of illness is Botulism from feeding on rubbish tips, this is forth such gull I have rescued in such a condition.
