08/05/2013 Bryan Wainwright, Fison''s Road, Will Pits. 4 Gadwall, 10 Eurasian Teal, 10 Mallard, 8 Shoveler, 1 Great Crested Grebe Will Pits Scrape, 4 Marsh Harrier 2 males 2 female, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 8 Ringed Plover W end Goole Moor, 4 Northern Lapwing, 1 TEMMINCK''S STINT: (2nd for Thorne Moors) Bryan Wainwright, Steve Hiner (Natural England), Irvin Payne, Ian McDonald, Mick Oliver. BPW located it between Blackwater Dike and Goole Moor Tram on the W side of Goole (Thorne) Moors in flight (07.40) while tracking 3 fairly distant flying Green/Wood Sandpiper (which were viewed only briefly due to appearance of closer flying stint). The stint at first glance looked like a Sand Martin, until thin white wingbars and white outer tails were seen. The stint flew erratically further away joining the circling sandpipers briefly before heading N alone and being lost to view. I drove a little further along Fison’s limestone road birding all the time until just S of Blackwater Dike before Shoulder o’ Mutton Tram I saw a Little Ringed Plover (seen in this general area a few times) on a small peat island then a Greenshank on another small peat island close by. Next to the Greenshank was another smaller wader (07.50) which initially looked like a Common Sandpiper, but this was quickly dismissed on size alone. It was a stint, closer inspection revealed upperparts and breastband to be a dull light sandy brown and quite greyish depending on light (so winter coming to summer plumage). The breast band was continuous (no break in middle) and well demarcated and the upperparts were quite uniform in colour the head being especially plain. There was no supercilium or other marks or crown. The chin was whiter. This plain face helped rule out Least and Long-toed Stint The bill was short (as long as the head) dark and almost straight. The primary projection was extended well beyond the tertials and almost to the tail tip, a point against it being Least Sandpiper. The leg colour took a little longer to see properly, but they never looked black. In good light they were dull yellowish with a slight green tinge. This was viewed from just over 100m with both a Optolyth TBS80 with 60x (zoom) and Nikon spotting scope with 40x (zoom). As I started to go closer, all the birds froze and were looking at something (not me) and the stint flew. In flight the thin white wing bar and the white outer tail feathers were again noted, no call was heard probably because of the E3 wind. As it flew next to a Meadow Pipit a good size comparison was made with the stint seeming slightly smaller (narrow wings?). It flew erratically somewhat recalling a bat. Again I lost it as it went N.

As I got back in my car I saw what probably flushed it as a Short-eared Owl flew so close I could see the bright yellow eyes without bins!

I returned a bit later to Goole Moor Tram (which I had checked before finding stint) thinking it may have gone to the first pools from the W there (walk along tram past a belt of trees some 300m and the pools are after trees). There were 8 Ringed Plover, 5 Dunlin and the Temminck’s Stint. As I started back to the car I saw Steve Hiner drive by and phoned him. Although here the stint was about 160m away Steve was happy with it saying “Definitely Temminck’s not Little Stint”. He left 10.35 locating and directing another birder Irvin Payne, who got similar views and said “Could see all features including pale legs”.

After birding elsewhere for a time I met a couple of botanist I know who also liked birds and showed them the stint in same area but this time much closer, perhaps only 70m away. Ian and Mick got excellent views and were happy (after looking in Collin’s Guide) that it was Temminck’s. It was still present at that location, W end Goole Moor Tram at 16.00 when we left.

Please consult maps and directions given at base of this blog and elsewhere on this website (Humberhead Peatlands write up and Humberhead Peatlands Photo Tour, links to maps etc). Briefly access is from the far end Grange Road, Moorends taking the Public Right of Way past the Recreation Ground, through the former colliery grounds onto the moors. Head N on any of the many paths (the first left immediately after the metal entrance bridge is as good as any) at the end turn right to the limestone road, head N (Drax in front of you) following the road past open bog/moor round a bend and continue N until just before the road starts to bend W towards some trees and Creyke’s entrance gate. Here at this bend is the last raised straight path before Creyke’s metal entrance gate that heads E to Goole Moor Tram. Take this E path for about 300m through a belt of trees and view the large pools N of the path (farmland and Goole docks can be seen distantly through the fringe edge of trees to the N). From Grange Road to here is about 2.5 miles across this big reserve. Cars can access only with a key from Natural England.

5 Dunlin W end Goole Moor, 38 Black-tailed Godwit flew over all floods circling before heading W, maybe landing far W moors, 3 Green Sandpiper flew over W side moors, short view due to stint (poss.
