Birding Site Guide

Fundación Imaymana PRE-BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL

THIS MAGNIFICENT RESERVE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT. THE RESERVE COMPRISES 200HA OF A 700HA BLOCK OF FOREST, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE OTHER FOREST OWNERS ARE RAPIDLY CLEARING THEIR FOREST. THEY ARE PREPARED TO SELL AND FUNDACIÓN IMAYMANA IS EXTREMELY KEEN TO PURCHASE AS MUCH FOREST AS POSSIBLE, BUT THEY LACK FUNDS. If all this forest could be saved it would represent the largest single such foothill block of forest in Pichincha province and the last refuge in Pichincha for such birds as Banded Ground-Cuckoo and Long-wattled Umbrellabird. If you can help please contact the foundation (they have English speaking people).

Take the main road from Quito through the town of San Miguel de Los Bancos and shortly after between KM104-105 there is a well signed right-hand turning to Pachijal. Take this unsurfaced road and follow for 3km, then there is a left turn which goes down another unsurfaced road/track for another 3km. After this there is the entrance lane which continues straight ahead, and for this section 4-wheel-drive is required. This lane is 2km long and reaches a large bamboo gate first and then a further few hundred metres the main gate which is signed Mangaloma Reserve. The owners will only allow pre-book and paid visits ($5 each), pay at Canopy, which is signed right off the main Quito road (outbound) at Miraflores (opposite to the turning to Bellavista Research Centre road) at c.KM68 Follow the signs on this road a short way then take a left turning to Canopy (or TuCanopy).

This site has the best and most extensive forest in lowland Pichincha, and the bird list in this virtually unstudied area is already well over 300 species. To visit this private reserve you must prebook, and entry fee is $5 each. There is basic accommodation $15 each a night.

Banded Ground-Cuckoo, Long-wattled Umbrellabird and other great rarities occur here.

Birds (and notes) seen by Charles Hesse 2nd-5th August, 2006. The full site list is below the 2 personal lists.

This is a private reserve only accesible with prior permission from the owners or Agustina Arcos This email address is being protected from spambots. It is best to contact her at least several days before you intend to visit as she does not check her email every day. Directions above; you could walk from the main road, which would probably take a couple of hours. There is basic but comfortable accommodation (no electricity), with beds, shower, kitchen, etc. It is currently $5 to enter the reserve for the day and $10 per day if you stay (bring your own food), but these prices might soon change.

A worker lives at a house inside the entrance gate of the reserve and he can show visitors the trail system. On from his house, the grass track ends in an old, broken-down house that is now just a platform. It is excellent birding from here especially if you have a scope. Look out for Black Hawk-Eagle, Black-tipped Cotinga, Little Cuckoo and 4 species of swifts, including the rare Spot-fronted. Before this house, on the right, is an area with palms where the Choco subspecies of the Maroon-tailed Parakeet feeds on palm fruit. A trail leads from here, through open habitat (Choco Woodpecker, Pacific Antwren and Green Thistletail) and finally enters forest. The forest has excellent birding although several days are needed to see many of the species.
I missed Baudo Guan and Banded Ground-Cuckoo which have both been seen here. There are 2 loop trails worth exploring, and near the end of the main trail there is another trail leading steeply up to the highest area where it is possible to see Long-wattled Umbrellabirds. I spent 4 days birding here and only saw them on 1 day. It was sunny and 2 males were calling away at 9am. This spot was also good for White-whiskered Hermit, Purple-crowned Fairy and Slate-throated Gnatcatcher. A final area to check would be some open habitat with patchy forest in the other direction from the platform. Here I saw Orange-fronted Barbet and Grey-and-gold Tanager.
