Birding Site Guide

On a recent (October 2006) tour by Paul Smith these species were recorded.

We recorded a total of 14 of the 18 Chaco endemic species, and 1 of the 2 Pantanal endemic species known in Paraguay. With many of the lagoons dry most of the wintering waterfowl had departed and very few passage waders were observed. Only 19 Chilean Flamingo was present at Campo Maria, alongside flocks of White-cheeked Pintail and odd Ringed Teals. Records of interest included Greater Rhea, White-bellied Nothura, several Laughing Falcon, Black-chested Buzzard-eagle, 50+ Wilsons Phalarope, one Baird´s and one Stilt Sandpiper, Black-legged Seriema, a male Blue-crowned Trogon, Golden-green Woodpecker, Great Rufous and Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper, Chaco Earthcreeper, numerous Little Thornbird, Stripe-backed Antbird, 50+ Chilean Swallow, White-lined and Lowland Hepatic Tanagers. September-November is usual time to visit.

You will need to phone for permission and accommodation beforehand contact the Chaco Foundation (see foot). Leave Asunción heading N on Route 9, towards Filadelfia (450km). Around 50km before Filadelfia there is a right (E) turning at Hotel Los Pioneros. Take this and follow the signs to Laguna Capitán. When you arrive at the accommodation there is a small lagoon (not Laguna Capitán) and some large dormitory rooms, and shared bathrooms with hot water. There is a kitchen but you must bring all your own food. The cost is US$3.50 per night per person. There is some good birding here but other areas require driving to, these are the main lagoons of Laguna Capitán and Laguna Ganso, around which, located in different estancias are all the other places of accommodation.

There is also a campsite around 30km from the Chaco Foundation go to the junction and go right at the Esso sign and right at the roundabout and look for a sign saying Chaco Lodge campsite. You need permission to stay here (see foot) and have to arrange to get the key off the owner for the gate. Also heading right from the Esso junction is Campo Maria, US$9 a night per person. The house is located at the entrance gate, and taking the other fork brings you to a view point over the lake.

If you go left instead of right from the Esso junction you will arrive at Estancia Laguna Ganso. To get to the lake turn right before you reach the estancia.
