Birding Site Guide

This is a reserve of high altitude marsh and montane forest, which though only 2 hours from Antananarivo is little visited. This is a shame since the wetland birding here is outstanding and there is Mananara Lodge to stay at. Of the 82 bird species, 43 are endemic and may include Madagascar Snipe, Madagascar Wood Rail, Madagascar Rail, Grey Emutail, Meller’s Duck, Madagascar (Long-eared) Owl and Madagascar Nightjar. The very difficult Rufous-headed Ground Roller can sometimes be found in the forest. Other possibilities are Crossley’s Babbler, Velvet Asity and Madagascar Partridge.
