Birding Site Guide

This area is in SE Ghana not far from the coast below (SW) the Kwahu plateaux of Lake Volta. Three main rivers have their watersheds in the Atewa Range and these are the Ayensu and Densu and the Birim which after a long detour joins the River Pra.

Other Fauna 

Rare primates include Geoffroy's Pied Colobus (Colobus vellerosus) and Olive Colobus (Procolobus verus).

Amphibians of 32 species are found many of which are threatened. The Critically Endangered Togo Slippery Frog Conraua derooi has its main population here.

Of butterfly 570 species have been recorded including two that are known only from this forest (Mylothis atewa and Anthene helpsi).

 

Flora 

There are 765 vascular plant species including 106 endemic to Upper Guinea (humid forests west of Togo/Benin) and six with highly localised distributions.
