Around 12 local people from the surrounding villages work at the lodge. There is a research station adjacent to the lodge which can cater for a further 18 people.
The Maquipucuna Foundation has been working for 20 years around the area in conservation and development with the communnities. The Web page is Maquipucuna

Birds List
LISTADO PRELIMINAR DE AVES DE LA RESERVA MAQUIPUCUNA Y DEL BOSQUE PROTECTOR DE LA CUENCA ALTA DEL RÍO GUAYLLABAMBA. 2008.
PRELIMINARY BIRD LIST OF MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE AND THE ‘HIGH BASIN’ PROTECTED FOREST OF THE GUAYLLABAMBA RIVER. 2008.
Important Information before the use of this list:
Obviously this list is incomplete due to the extension of both the Maquipucuna reserve and the ‘High Basin’ Protected Forest of the Guayllabamba River (CARG), at this moment in time (April 2008) the Protected Forest is increasing in size.
It is possible that this list has species which may confuse the user, as some changes have been identified such as new families and names (latin / english), such changes have taken place through decisions taken by SACC (South American Classification Committee); to research and find out the reasons for these changes and the absence of well-known species, please check: South American Classification Committee
(This web-page is constantly updated).
On other side, a verification of bird populations and an analysis of their state of conservation is needed, some of which are under global and local threat, such as in the case of: Cephalopterus penduliger (Long-wattled Umbrellabird / Pájaro Paraguas Longipéndulo), whose last record was near Santa Lucia in 2005 (W. Pérez, personal comment), another specie which needs to be evaluated is Cyanolyca pulchra (Beautiful Jay / Urraca Hermosa), amongst others.
