Birding Site Guide

This plateau is situated in the southern part of Vietnam's western highlands. The main city Da Lat is situated 80 km ne of Ho Chi Minh City, at 1,525m. There are 2 reserves; Chu Yang Sin and Thuong Da Nhim but birding can be carried out anywhere. Places visited by our team in 1997 included Mount Lang Biang, Datania Waterfall, Ho-Tuyem-Lam and these are written up separately with lists on BSG. The dominant tree of the region is Pinus kesiya, though there are also extensive introduced rubber plantations. Threatened birds of the area are show below. There is also a distinct subspecies of Spot-breasted Laughingthrush considered by some to be a separate species; Orange-breasted Laughingthrush. The area also holds such stunning birds as Cutia (we saw 2 at Ho Tuyen Lam), Rufous-backed and Black-headed Sibias, Grey-headed Parrotbill, Blue-winged Minla and Black-throated Sunbird.
