Birding Site Guide

This protected area is part of the Eastern Rainforest, but of montane type. There are also a couple of good marshes in the area: Torotorofotsy and Ampasipotsy. The Perinet Reserve is actually a small reserve 5km SSW of this area and is only 810ha. The forest at Mantadia are a 3 hours drive east of Antananarivo on the paved RN2 and hold four Ground Rollers: Scaly and Pitta-like and Short-legged Ground Roller and Rufous-headed with other species including Velvet Asity, Madagascar Cuckoo-Roller, Crossley’s Babbler, Collared Nightjar, Madagascar Rail, Madagascar Flufftail, Madagascar Wood-rail, Blue and Red-fronted Coua, Madagascar Wood Rail, Collared Nightjar, Madagascar Cuckoo Hawk, Hookbilled and Blue Vanga, Rand's Warbler, Coral-billed Nuthatch Vanga and Tylas. In total 108 species of birds have been recorded.

Specific to the rainforest of Mantadia National Park, it is possible to see here 3 Oxylabes, 3 Asitys, Forest Rock-thrush and Brown Emutail and Helmet Vanga

The marshes hold such sought after species as Meller's Duck, Madagascar Snipe, Madagascar Rail, Slender-billed Flufftail, Grey Emutail and Madagascar Swamp Warbler.

Mammals: 14 species of lemur have been recorded including: Diademed Sifaka Propithecus diadema, Indri Indri indri, Eastern Lesser/Grey Bamboo Lemur Hapalemur griseus, Red-bellied Lemur Eulemur rubriventer, Common Brown Lemur Eulemur fulvus, Aye-aye Daubentonia madagascariensis.

LEMURS CONSERVATION FOUNDATION

Reptiles: 51 species have been recorded including the biggest chameleon of Madagascar Calumma parsonii, Madagascar Tree Boa Boa manditra and 84 species of Amphibian.

Fishes: rare species include: Ratsirakia legendrei and Rheocles alaotrensis.

Plants: Terpsiphone mutataCymbidiella falcigera, Vakoana Pandanus sp. , Ambora Tambourissa sp. and Fanjàna Cyathea sp. .
