Birding Site Guide

This is a superb area, offering a wide selection of habitats on a large scale, many with public access including Public Rights of Way. From the main road, the A638, between Ranskill and Retford turn E, after 1.1km on the S side of the road is the parking area for Daneshill Lakes. From here there are paths and PRoW around the area.

Again from the A638 drive E 3.6km to Lound crossroads, turn N along Town Lane a short way (before out of village) and on right (E) side is Neatsholme Lane Public Bridleway. Park in the village and walk down the track and through the bridle gate. It is 2.37km from here to the bailey bridge over the River Idle, where the pits end, though it is possible to walk all the way to Clayworth. There is a Public Footpath 650m before the river that heads N over a metal gate to Wildgoose Farm, here at the sheep field just past the pits was where the Steppe Grey Shrike was.

As well as birding all along Neatsholme Lane with its mature hedges and viewing areas for the pits it is also possible to drive straight on from the crossroads in Lound, past the works and along Chain Bridge Lane. When past the works, park up at the side of the lane and walk along the lanes to bird. It is possible to continue all the way to Hayton. The lane heading S passes a waterfowl reserve.
